On the 11th April, 2019 I wrote an article titled “An urgent need for Truck driving School”, the motive behind the article is the rampant road traffic crashes caused by articulated vehicles across the country. Statistically, approximately 1.35 million people are killed and 50 million seriously injured due to road crashes annually. Road crashes kill 1 person every 24 seconds — about 3,700 killed a day. In Q2 of 2020 according to the statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics of Nigeria 64% of Road Traffic Crashes(RTC) that occurred were commercial vehicles, 34% of those vehicles are trucks, tankers and trailers. The Statistics also shows that Human factor make up 80.7% of the causes. The shocking revelation was that these accidents occurred during the COVID-19 lock down which means that Heavy Duty Trucks were the main actors in the RTC.

This is not surprising because of the high rate of illiteracy amongst heavy duty trucks drivers; this has led to lack of understanding of the terms of safety on the road. Issues such as speed limits, ideal tonnage carriage, maintenance of vehicles, safety procedures in truck handling need to be instilled formally in this sector of the transportation value chain. This is because once accidents occur with these types of vehicle its results are very huge economically, environmentally and psychological to the society.

Hence the reason why Truckademy was birthed was to bring a pragmatic solution to the global problem. The word “Truckademy” comes from the coinage of Truck and Academy. It is a driving school duly registered under the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on March 2021 with the name “Truckademy Driving and Training School Limited”. The Company is a truck drivers’ training, re-training, recruitment and outsourcing company. The Company is located at the heart of Nigeria’s foremost industrial hub Sango-Ota, Ogun State due to the volume of articulated trucks along the corridor. The company has an ambitious goal to train, re-train and supply over 1% of Nigerian truck drivers by 2025, 5% by 2030 and over 10% by year 2040 and to be a major truck drivers’ training hub by year 2050. We will be leveraging on technology to our approach of training. We are already making arrangement to partner and collaborate with International and local organizations with regards to safety related training and advocacy for truck drivers and other stakeholders in the industry. We know the Nigerian space is tough to sustain any start-up but we are determined to work with the government and the general public to ensure we all contribute our quota towards a safer road.

We will be launching a two days free safety training for truck drivers for 20 companies between 24th-25th, July 2021 registration starts from the 21st June to 21st July, 2021 as a way of kick starting our activities. The seminar will hold at our head office No 4, Mercury Road, Off Sona Breweries, Sona Bus Stop, Sango-Ota, Ogun State. If you want to be a part of the training or you want your truck driver(s) to be a part kindly send an email to info@thetruckademy.com or call +2349092372617 for booking limited space available.
